Student Summit November 16, 2006 at The Toledo Zoo
The Student Watershed Watch (SWW) helps our region’s young people to appreciate our streams, so they may grow
to be wise stewards. Each year the SWW brings hundreds of students together from urban and rural school districts
in the Maumee Area of Concern to learn about our local environment.
Highlights of this two-part program includes water quality testing performed by Junior and Senior High School classes
at local stream sites. Students test for temperature, turbity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and many other parameters using
standardized test kits to determine the health of the water. Benthic samples are collected from the stream bottoms
for analyzing macroinvertebrate communities.
The program culminates at a Student Summit where student representatives from participating schools release
and compare their results. Students also have an opporunity to network with their peers and local professionals
during the poster and workshop sessions of the Summit.
Information from previous years including participating schools, sampling sites, and results can be downloaded
from the Maumee RAP Publications and Documents page.
Please call 419-241-9155 ext. 123 for more information
on how your class can get involved or how you can contribute to this educational program.
